Business models made simple

Why this matters

A business model isn't just about making money; it's about how you create, deliver, and capture value. Understanding this helps you think about sustainability and how your solution can reach many people while staying strong.

7-day study plan

  1. Read

Value is not just the price tag on a product; it is the specific benefit or 'job' a product does for a customer. In entrepreneurship, we call this the Value Proposition. It is the reason why a customer chooses your solution over a competitor's. Value can be functional, like a bicycle that helps you reach school faster, or emotional, like a brand of sneakers that makes you feel confident and trendy. Understanding value is the first step in building a business model because if you are not providing something useful, nobody will use your service. Let us look at an Indian example: Zepto or Blinkit. Their core value is not just 'selling groceries.' Their real value is 'extreme convenience and time-saving.' They solve the problem of a busy student or a working parent who forgot to buy milk or needs a snack immediately. The value they provide is the 10-minute delivery time which reduces the stress of waiting or going out to a shop. To identify value, follow these three steps. First, identify the pain point: what is the specific struggle the user faces? Second, identify the gain: how does your solution make their life better? Third, describe the transformation: what can the user do now that they could not do before? If you can articulate these three points, you have found the heart of your business model.

    Do

Think about your favorite product or service. What 'value' does it bring to you (e.g., saves time, makes you happy, solves a need)?

    Check yourself
    • Can I explain the difference between a product and the value it provides?
    • What is the specific 'pain point' my favorite app solves for me?
    • Why would I choose this product over a cheaper alternative?

Revision notes

  • A business model describes how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value.
  • It answers key questions: Who are your customers? What problem do you solve?
  • How do you deliver your solution to customers?
  • What key activities and resources do you need?
  • How do you make money (revenue streams)?
  • What are your main costs?
  • Value Proposition: The unique value you offer to customers.
  • Understanding your business model helps ensure long-term viability.

Global case studies

India · Chai Point

A billion cups of chai, a simple model

Chai Point identified a common daily need in India: a consistent, hygienic, and convenient cup of chai. Their business model focuses on both B2C (outlets, delivery) and B2B (chai dispensers for offices), offering a standardized product with multiple revenue streams, creating a strong presence in urban India.

Takeaway: A clear understanding of customer needs and diverse channels for delivery can turn a simple everyday product into a successful business.

USA · Red Hat

Open-source software, big business

Red Hat built a highly successful business model around open-source software (Linux). Instead of selling the software itself, they sold subscriptions for support, training, and consulting services for enterprise clients. This innovative model proved that you can 'give away' your product and still build a multi-billion dollar company.

Takeaway: Innovative business models can find ways to monetize even 'free' products by providing essential services and support around them.

Choose a well-known Indian company (e.g., Zomato, Reliance Jio, a local grocery store). Identify their main customer, the value they offer, and at least two ways they make money. Write these down in a short paragraph.
