Before you start writing, you must understand what the examiner wants. In Indian board exams, questions often contain 'directive verbs' like 'Discuss', 'Analyse', or 'Compare'. These words are instructions. If you miss them, you might write a great essay that still loses marks because it did not answer the specific prompt. For example, if a question says 'Compare rural and urban education in India', you cannot just write about how great schools are in cities. You must look at both sides and show similarities or differences. If it says 'Analyse', you need to look at the 'why' and 'how' behind a topic, not just state facts. To master this, follow the 'Underline and Define' method. Read the question twice. Underline the main topic and the directive verb. Then, quickly define what that verb requires. 'Discuss' means providing a balanced argument, while 'Evaluate' means giving your opinion on whether something is good or bad based on evidence.
